Microbiology and Immunology
An MD/PhD student may pursue a PhD in Microbiology and Immunology. A total of 90 hours (30 class hours and 60 research hours) is required for the PhD in Microbiology and Immunology.
Up to 20 credit hours toward the PhD in Microbiology and Immunology may be applied from the first two years of medical school provided the MD/PhD student earned a B or better in the medical school classes.

* This is a one-hour course that must be taken for credit four times in the Ph.D. program. When enrolled, the student will present a seminar to the Department covering the research progress. Students not enrolled for credit are expected to attend all Departmental seminars.
An MD/PhD student may participate in the Qualifying Exam during the spring semester of the first academic year in the PhD-track provided the student maintained a B average and completed all required coursework.
The Qualifying Exam contains both a written and oral component and will cover general principals in Microbiology and Immunology.
Upon achieving a passing score on the Qualifying Exam, the student may enroll in MI 6980 (Research for Doctor's Dissertation).
