Bioengineering

An MD/PhD student may pursue a PhD in Bioengineering through the College of Engineering on the Norman campus of the University of Oklahoma. Eligible students should have a B.S. degree in engineering from an accredited program. A total of 90 hours (40 coursework hours and 50 research hours) is required for the PhD in Bioengineering.

Up to 28 credit hours toward the PhD in Bioengineering may be applied from the first two years of medical school provided the MD/PhD student earned a B or better in the medical school classes.

The student will complete an Advisory Conference during the third year of the MD/PhD program (i.e., first year of the PhD component) in Bioengineering. An MD/PhD student may undertake the General Exam requirement in the PhD-track upon completion of all required coursework with a minimum 3.00 GPA. The General Exam for the PhD in Bioengineering emphasizes preparation of a formal written research proposal with an oral presentation and defense. The topic of the General Exam may be related to the subject area of the student’s dissertation.
